fall 2011 part 2

I have just had the pleasure of viewing the new Versace collection for autumn winter 2011/12, and they look phenomenal. The colours used are so vibrant and eye catching. At a first glance it is obvious that the idea of positive and negative has been played with in a clever way. Instead of just using a positive or a negative print in the middle of the garment Versace has used the same idea as a trim in many cases such as the baroque curlicues that were once a house signature were blown up into a single boldly coloured detail and used as necklines and just coloured blocks. The woollen crepes make for a fantastic military inspired silhouette which are seen strongly through the whole collection. Personally being a print student I find the first half of the garments in this collection to be the most inspiring as it follows on to go into using leathers and much more darker colours making the collection end in almost a vampish light.

Here I have attached the newspaper article in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. I am the one in the smaller picture first one on the left.

fall 2011

I have been trawling through Style.com for the latest shows and they are fabulous, obviously!
I have compiled a list look book of my favourites.

Naeem Khan - Fall 2011

Naeem Khan's inspiration was based on a subtle Silk Road. I just love the last image in which he uses the laser cut, patent leather flowers. Each of the flowers are dotted with sequins which have all been hand-sewn onto the red satin number that opened the show. The ostrich feathers added for an extra special texture that stunned the catwalk. It almost seemed like the dresses were floating with the feathers, utterly delightful.

Matthew Williamson - Fall 2011

Matthew Williamson's inspiration cited his inspiration as Francisco Infante-Arana, the Russian artist who photographs mirrored sculptures in various landscapes, creating a fun-house version of the natural world. These fabulous sharp prints and texture are right up my street. My final project I am working on right now for uni involves a lot of optical art and I think that Williamson's latest collection pulls it off fabulously! Being one of my favourite designers I very much look up to him and his designs. It is definitely a good change to see some sharp prints from Williamson as his last Resort collection was very soft and to be honest not one that I was too crazy about. I can still see his signature coming through, his fabrics are still very much lightweight aside from the ombré Mongolian lamb chubbies. Also there seems to be a fascination with feathers and this seasons designers.

Holly Fulton - Fall 2011

Holly Fulton, I LOVE YOU! My word, she is amazing! Her prints are something I aspire to come up with some day. I would be absolutely honoured if I could work with her. She is definitely in my top ten designers to watch. Her initial inspiration was Coco Chanel visiting Scotland with her beau, the Duke of Westminster. I love her eye for the pop sensibility and art-deco detailed, sixties silhouettes. Her silhouettes may seem simple but the way in which she applies her prints make them look a lot more complex than they actually are. As she has progressed with her shows so has her styling skills. Fulton hasn't overwhelmed each outfit with over the top accessories, only where they were needed. In this collection her designs and prints speak for themselves and very much make the collection more sophisticated.

Mary Katranzou - Fall 2011

The designer backstage today said, "It's more fluid, more real." Even so I think that this collection was just as jaw droppingly beautiful as her Spring collection. This was because Katrantzou imagined the woman as a connoisseur, surrounded by objects of beauty like Fabergé eggs, Meissen porcelain, cloisonné enamel, and Ming vases; all of them were reproduced in hyper-vivid prints. The colours are absolutely spectacular mixing solid prints with fluidity just like the water surrounded by the koi in one print where they all seem like they are swimming before your eyes.

Talking about her choice of silhouettes things got more interesting when the designer softened her silhouette. "It's hellishly difficult to put a placement print on a bias-cut dress," she sighed backstage. Katrantzou's silhouettes were taken from the haute couture wardrobes of their imagined owners. (The names of legendary style icons like Diana Vreeland, Babe Paley, and the Duchess of Windsor). Even though Katranzou developed her designs in this way they still seem a stones throw away from the lamp shade inspiration in her last Spring collection.

I went to get the Evening Chronicle but I forgot it at uni on my desk so I just found the link on their website to add here for now.

Dorothy Perkins recently presented university students nationwide to take part in a High Fashion Summer 2011 competition. Students were asked to design a final print based of their inspiration and apply it to a mini collection for the summer of this year.

I entered and my work was sent off to Dorothy Perkins by the lecturers and was shortlisted a one of ten in the country! So excited and happy the winner gets a months internship but the work is at a fabulously high standards. Saw some other work from other students that was entered and they were absolutely amazing.

The Evening Chronicle wanted to do a piece of the finalists and came into uni to take photographs today I have NEVER had such a sore jaw after faking a smile so much. However, I did relish this great opportunity.

I am going to pick up the newspaper soon and will post up pictures!
